You met while studying at ECAL and have been working together since 2015. What made you decide to work together, and how would you say Panter & Tourron has progressed over the years?

We firstly collaborated on a project while studying at the MAS in Luxury and Craftsmanship program at ECAL in Lausanne, Switzerland, but was only at the end of the year and thanks to the fact that we were both awarded with the scholarship offered by the school (usually handed to one student only) that we decided to start a long term collaboration as a studio.

How similar or how different your individual styles are? If you weren't working together, what would be the characteristics of each of your brands?

Alexis and I come from different design backgrounds, Italian and French, both characterized by a very present architectural and design estethic, but we believe that like many colleagues of our generation (and the one after) we distanced ourselves from those imprints embracing a cross-cultural “post-internet” visual approach, driven more by material research, common visual references and technology driven innovation more then a common “national” visual language.

Going through with our studies and practice we develop a new vision for what we think “luxury” design is nowadays, shifting from the outdated and exclusive nature of it and reinterpreting it as a conscious choice of quality over quantity, crafting experiences and products that are unique in term of materiality, expression, durability and ultimately sustainability.

Your Tense collection's durability, portability, and sustainability nod to the on-the-move or 'nomad' lifestyle. Could you tell us more about the research project and the inspiration behind it?

The collection celebrates the multi-locality of today and tomorrow through furniture and objects that we call “neo-nomadic” essentials, characterized both by sculptural forms and innovative materials. They are easily transportable, tool-free and entirely connected by the force of tension allowing one to recreate and rebuild a home anywhere in a few simple steps.

The nomadic reference nods actually back to some of humanity’s first construction systems: stretching animal skins on wooden or bone frames to create temporary shelters, safe and strong but able to move.

The aim of the collection is to showcase a radical new way of envisioning fast-assembly, flat-pack and tool-free range of furnitures.

These solutions allows us to tackle different problems commonly present within the furniture industry.  The flat-pack and lightweight nature of the collection offers a more sustainable approach to shipping and transporting, reducing the carbon footprint during this phase. Similarly opting for bonding free solution allows the products to be repairable, upcyclable, easily recyclable and ultimately circular.

You have collaborated with a wide range of clients with varying backgrounds and needs, from Airbnb to Museum für Gestaltung to Hermès. What's your creative process like when approaching a new project, from learning a client's requirements and stories to creation

We don’t perceive ourselves as formal driven, but definitely project driven or even more brief driven in case of a commercial collaboration with a client, we like to work within a set of boundaries instead of just having “carte blanche” when approaching a project. We feel that is when we challenge certain limitation that the real innovation, both technical or formal, happens.

Which one of your projects do you consider the most interesting so far, and why?

That’s a tough one, we have a lot of projects - gallery ones, limited editions, etc. - that have been great source of inspiration and the spark for more mature projects later on. But the most interesting one so far is definitely Tense. It started as a self initiated project and research on the history of tensile structure as alternative construction technique that oppose tension to compression, otherwise predominantly present in the history fo the western world, in parallel with a broader exploration on alternative materials and techniques suited both for small and larger scale productions.

CHRISTOFLE

The result culminated as a first collection presented in Milan in 2019, which gained a lot of attention in the press and generated different work opportunities for us thanks to that. The same collection for example is being reworked and expanded right now and will be edited next year by Cappellini that will present it during the next Milan Design fair. Other projects we are developing right now with other brands are in some way the result of the same research initiated from Tense.

Could you share a bit with us about your next big project?

The next big project, or rather collaboration, that will be launch later this year is one with Balenciaga. Like many brands in the fashion industry, they are approaching design in a more holistic way and we were happy to collaborate with them offering a specific industrial design approach to their artistic vision on a different range of various new products and accessories we designed together with the fashion house.
