The Streetscape Research Centre (SRC) held its annual awards ceremony last Thursday in a virtual setting and two Hassell projects were awarded with major honours. The West Bund Riverfront Upgrade in Shanghai took out the Outstanding Award, while Riverside Green – South Bank Parklands in Brisbane received an Award of Excellence.
Since opening, our West Bund project has become one of the most loved lifestyle destinations in Shanghai. We worked with its overarching organisation, The West Bund Group, to create more enjoyable and easily-accessible space for the public. In early 2021, Hassell was commissioned to work on a series of core waterfront area upgrade projects spanning 11.4km from north to south along the Huangpu River.
“Landscape architecture is not just about creating beautiful places but about building connections between people and with nature. We appreciate the concept and ideas that Hassell brought to the Xuhui Waterfront nodes that we worked on together as a project. The outcome reflects our respect for the site, care for people's requirements and it encourages interaction between people to create a waterfront lifestyle for everyone to enjoy,” said Ye Keyang, Deputy GM of the West Bund Group.
Riverside Green is a new ‘green heart’ that supports Brisbane’s leisure and recreation needs at a time when inner-city population growth is putting pressure on the city’s existing parks and public spaces. Visitors can relax and gather on the riverfront’s expansive events lawn, rainforest and subtropical pavilion, which replaces restaurants damaged in the 2011 floods. The project has also won two awards at AILA since its completion in 2021.
The SRC Streetscape Design Award is initiated by the SRC and curated by the World Architecture Festival China (WAFC). It aims to promote the progression of streetscape design in China and leverage the power of landscape design in an urban renewal context. These awards, along with the other work of the SRC, have made an enormous contribution towards understanding and celebrating the role that streets and public spaces make to our lives and cities, and one important thing the pandemic has taught us is just how important these spaces are for community safety and health.
