BBC New Broadcasting House

BBC Studios Unveils

New HOK-Designed

Bristol Workplace

BBC Studios’ new Bristol workplace is its largest outside London and houses staff from some of its most popular programs. The new BBC Studios workplace in Bristol accommodates staff from the world-renowned Natural History Unit (NHU) and Factual Entertainment, producer of programs such as Top Gear, Antiques Roadshow, Gardeners’ World, Countryfile and DIY SOS.

“We designed the space to showcase the content pioneers, inventors and reinventors of BBC Studios, while also providing an inclusive and inspiring workplace that motivates people to do their best work and helps them feel valued,” said Tim Hatton, senior interior design professional at HOK.

The 60,000-sq.-ft. workplace spans the lower three floors of the six-story Bridgewater House in the heart of Bristol. HOK designed the news space to reflect BBC Studios’ commitment to inclusivity, collaboration and sustainability.

A separate entrance and reception welcome employees and guests into the workplace. Bi-fold doors along the reception area open onto a landscaped garden, allowing the space to quickly flex for hosting events and other gatherings. An auditorium on the ground floor provides additional space for presentations and masterclasses.

To help all staff feel included, the workplace accommodates both hypersensitive and hyposensitive individuals. Employees may choose work settings that best suit their tasks and preferred surroundings.

Non-hierarchical office space on the top two levels features team neighborhoods wrapped around the perimeter of the building. This broken-plan layout uses shelving, plants and dividers to form collaboration space and focus areas. Adjustable whiteboards embedded within the shelving help create customizable team zones and add acoustic privacy.

A central breakout area overlooking the ground-floor reception and events space serves as a social hub. Additional breakout/tea points on the office floors bring employees together. A variety of furniture types in these spaces encourage their use for work and socializing throughout the day.

The design reinforces BBC Studios’ commitment to the environment and NHU’s reputation as the world’s leading producer of content about the natural world.

All timber was certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), and most of the furniture in the workplace was reused. Additional health and sustainability measures included the use of clay-based paints that reduce airborne contaminants and walls made of cork, a natural and rapidly renewable material that also mitigates noise. The space has been awarded SKA Gold certification.

Services: Interiors

The new headquarters for BBC Studios, the primary commercial arm of the British Broadcasting Corporation, transforms the broadcaster’s historic Stage 6 at Television Centre into an open, flexible environment. HOK’s design promotes BBC’s iconic brand and facilitates creativity and knowledge sharing among 1,200 employees.

The industrial design aesthetic draws inspiration from the Television Centre’s 1960s origins as the “television factory” and former home of BBC News. To create an open, efficient workspace, the design relocated four central lift cores to a windowless wall on the east, replacing them with a feature spiral stairway. This helical staircase acts as the main circulation route for staff, providing physical and visual links between the six office floors. A daylight-filled, circular atrium creates a ground-floor gathering place.

Combining bench workstations with loose furniture options accommodates activities ranging from focused work to small or large meetings. Workstations radiate out from the atrium, with the quietest locations placed along the glazed perimeter. Surrounding the staircase and atrium are flexible, secondary settings that encourage collaboration. Enclosed meeting rooms are located deep inside the building.

Graphics and media displayed throughout the space celebrate BBC’s historic and ongoing role in shaping culture and covering world events.

BBC New

Broadcasting House

Location: London, UK

Size: 484,400 sq. ft. / 45,000 sq. m.

BBC's New Broadcasting House provides an iconic new home for its broadcast network, which reaches a worldwide audience of more than 241 million people. Bringing together BBC Television, BBC News, Global News, Audio & Music and World Service for the first time, the central London building houses nearly 6,000 staff from three 24-hour news channels, nine radio networks and 26 foreign language services. The space features Europe's largest newsroom.

The BBC challenged the design team to create a workplace incorporating technology that encourages new, more efficient ways of working. The space needed to spark creativity by harnessing the convergence of the BBC staff into an integrated hub. The BBC also wanted the space to encourage the public to learn more about its people and programming.

The team planned flexible work areas that accommodate the current and future needs of the BBC's 24-hour teams. Whenever feasible, central resources are shared. Flexible workstation clusters with extra data and power outlets accommodate changing team sizes.

Vertical links between shared informal working areas on each floor promote collaboration among individuals, programs and departments. Quiet, one-on-one spaces are grouped around the perimeter of the two large atria. A series of back-to-back booths, or railway carriages, facing the atria provide collaborative space on each floor. Breakout facilities are organized around a cyclorama overlooking All Saints Church.

The scheme celebrates the distinct identity of each department within the overall BBC brand and its distinctive red and orange palette. This brand consistency allows the BBC’s teams to broadcast from most locations within the building. Throughout the space, flexible, high-tech broadcast studios are available to any program or department. On the ground floor, a spacious public media café offers the public a view down into the BBC newsroom. An entrance space showcasing BBC programs and public art creates a dynamic destination.

Sustainable design features include an emphasis on durable, environmentally friendly furniture and finishes. The majority of the furniture was sourced from emerging British talent.
