Two projects by BAU Brearley Architects and Urbanists have won the 2022 AIA National Architecture Awards!

近期，澳大利亚建筑师协会公布了久负盛名的2022年国家建筑奖的获奖者。我们很荣幸地宣布，澳大利亚建筑师协会授予BAU建筑城市设计事务所两项国家级建筑大奖，其中维多利亚傲娇中心获得2022年澳大利亚建筑师协会国家公共建筑奖，元荡桥荣获2022年澳大利亚建筑师协会澳大利亚国际建筑奖！

Recently, the Australian Institute of Architects has revealed its winners for the prestigious 2022 National Architecture Awards. We are thrilled to announce that Victorian Pride Centre designed by BAU Brearley Architects+Urbanists and Grant Amon Architects has been awarded the ‘2022 Australian Institute of Architects National Award for Public Architecture’, and Yuandang Bridge designed by BAU Brearley Architects+Urbanists has been awarded the ‘2022 Australian Institute of Architects Australian Award for International Architecture’.

澳大利亚建筑师协会奖是一个划分等级的综合性评选，分别为国家级、州级和区域级，三种级别。为了获得国家建筑奖，澳大利亚建筑师协会的成员可根据项目的所在地，提交至相关地域进行评选，每个类别奖都是基于三层选拔制度。只有州级的优胜者方可进入国家建筑奖的候选名单。顾名思义，国家建筑奖是澳大利亚建筑师协会的最高级别奖项。

The National Architecture Awards is an integrated, hierarchical program resulting in annual awards at National, Chapter (State and Territory) and, in some states, regional levels. To enter the National Architecture Awards, Institute members submit projects at the relevant chapter or regional level depending on the project’s location. Awards in each category are based on a three-tier system, in decreasing order of merit. Only State or Territory Named and Architecture Awards progress to be considered for a National Award.

The jury describes VPC, “A symbolic place of gathering and celebration, the Victorian Pride Centre screams “St Kilda.” In this long overdue investment for an enduring sector, the architecture does not hold back. It is fun, provocative and celebrates the LGBTIQ+ community, while inviting in the neighbourhood as part of an educational experience to reduce prejudice.

Its expressionist design concept promotes and attracts, making no apologies for its liberated spirit. This is a hardworking building that is still deciphering what it wants or needs to be – and that is its intrigue. The centre will continue to evolve as its community demands; its free spirit is captured in the building’s program.

The Pride Centre evolves subliminally: through the lightfilled atrium, which changes in response to day and night, over its multiple street frontages and in its generous opening on to St Kilda Road. In so many regards, this is an experiential, evolving building that writes its own story. The architects are to be congratulated for enabling this unrestrained freedom within its St Kilda context.”

对于元荡桥，评委则评价道：“比起连接两岸的桥梁，元荡桥更是一个具有互动性的动态几何概念。作为一个具有挑战性和实验性的作品，它的连通性不仅仅是为了让人们在两岸之间移动。旅行可以是简单直接的，也可以是有趣互动的，巧妙的设计让人们不禁驻足，探索其中的乐趣。该项目更多的是一种体验，而非线性通道，不仅如此，它还为中国长三角一体化发展做出了重要的社会贡献。除基础设施工程外，这项复杂的工程还强调了渐进式设计的价值。”

The jury describes, “Yuandang Bridge is an evolved geometric concept that interacts rather than transcends from landing to landing. As experimental as it is brave, its connectivity goes beyond the movement between two points. Journeys can be simple and direct or they can be playful and interactive, persuading you to pause and explore. This project is more of an experience than a lineal passage and makes a significant social contribution to its site. On top of the infrastructural engineering required, this complex work highlights the value of progressive design.”
