Statement

Living and working in New York, Baras has exhibited extensively throughout the US and internationally. The Soviet-born artist has gained critical attention in the international art world in recent years, receiving the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in 2021, Guggenheim Fellowship in 2019, the Pollock- Krasner grant and the Chinati Foundation Residency in 2018, and the McDowell Fellowship in 2017.

Known for her rich and layered paintings, Baras’ works act as vestiges and relics of her everyday. Such works take shape through the act of layering of materials including fabrics, paper pulp, wood, and personal items. Process is essential to Baras, who works on several paintings at once, often spending several years on each piece before releasing it into the world.

Inspired by narratives of home and migration, Baras’ new suite of works are charged with an eclectic juxtaposition between abstract and representational, the physical and emotional, and fact and fiction.
