The 2021 International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) has announced that two Hassell projects have been recognised with awards at the Asia Pacific Landscape Architecture Awards: Xichong Coast Recovery Plan has taken out the highest Outstanding Award in the Disaster Response category and our conceptual master plan for the Green Central Forest Park in Beijing has received an Honourable Mention award in the Park and Environment category.
In 2018, Typhoon Mangkhut – one of the largest to hit Southern China – destroyed vast areas of Xichong’s coastal landscape, along with many buildings. Our plan for Xichong’s future restores wetlands and mangrove forests while also building tourism and education. Sustainable, community-driven ecotourism developments are located inland around existing villages – and away from environmentally sensitive areas. By limiting development and visitor numbers in conservation areas, we can protect local habitat and sensitive ecologies.
“Natural disaster is a relative concept. It’s an opportunity for humans to reflect on how we should co-exist with nature and the environment we live in. The Adventure Travel Guide we developed for Xichong is based on building a more resilient place and community with a reinforced self-recovery system. In the long term, it ensures the balance between ecological protection and economic development. The recognition from IFLA for our work demonstrates that resilience is one of the most important things we need to consider when designing for places and communities,” said Chong Wang, Hassell Managing Principal and project leader.
Only three years ago, what is now Beijing’s Tongzhou Green Central Forest Park was just one of the city’s numerous contaminated and ageing industrial estates. But a vision from the Beijing government to commission an international design competition has changed that, with 5.5 square kilometres of the overall 11.2 square-kilometre site opening in late 2020 as a rehabilitated oasis of nature in the city.
Hassell worked on the project for over two years with a range of partners and consultants, having been a joint winner of the conceptual design for the entire park in 2018. The overarching design is structured around an expression of the 24-season traditional Chinese lunar calendar, with the park divided up into a mosaic of forest rooms that emphasise the changing of these seasons.
“We have built a natural framework for the site’s ecological recovery which will evolve with time and with the culturally resonant Solar Terms as the backbone. It’s creating a place for people to experience the dynamic landscape beauty of the forest’s authentic growth – in an urban context,” said Sean Lin, Hassell Principal and project leader.
Xichong Coast Recovery Plan and four other Hassell project also recently won a range of awards at the 2021 Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) national awards.
