We’re excited to share that two Hassell projects have been recognised at the 2022 International Federation of Landscape Architects Awards (Asia Pacific region): Beijing Tongzhou Central Green Forest with an Award of Excellence and Panda Land Chengdu with an Honourable Mention. The theme for this year’s IFLA awards was ‘Climate Crisis Design’ and it was through this particular lens that projects were judged.
"Being recognised for the second year at the IFLA awards is an acknowledgement of both concept planning and project delivery. Hassell’s commitment to site-sensitive and sustainable design is rewarding and creates a long-term impact for communities and the planet, " said Sean Lin, Hassell Principal.
Awarded in the Wildlife, Biodiversity, Habitat Enhancement or Creation category, Tongzhou Central Green Forest Park in Beijing is a forest park with over 85% green coverage through the creation of ecological plant communities. This once contaminated industrial estate has been transformed into an oasis of nature, with the retention of 6,000 existing trees in addition to another 130,000 trees being planted, 90% of which are native species.
"Being recognised for the second year at the IFLA awards is an acknowledgement of both concept planning and project delivery. Hassell’s commitment to site-sensitive and sustainable design is rewarding and creates a long-term impact for communities and the planet, " said Sean Lin, Hassell Principal.
Our team collaborated with the Landscape Architecture Corporation of China to fully develop the Autumn and Winter sections of the park, all the way through to their completion.
Designed around the concept of the 24 season Chinese solar calendar, the idea of the park is that there is constant change taking place, so visitors will never have the same experience twice, always creating new ways to connect with the park. Based on one of the most important drivers of the project – attracting animals back to site – we introduced plants as food and nectar sources, and those that are most suitable as habitats. As a result, we received a great gift during the implementation of the project – the Eurasian Hoopoe, a bio-indicator, returned to the site.
Last year, the conceptual master plan for the Green Central Forest Park in Beijing received an Honourable Mention award in the IFLA Park and Environment category.
In Chengdu, the Panda Land Master Plan, awarded in the Analysis and Planning category, proposes a connected, immersive and authentic Panda Trail proposes a connected, immersive and authentic Panda Trail across the city that tells the conservation story of China’s iconic giant panda – inviting visitors to explore, discover and dream. The plan was among the winning proposals in a design competition initiated by the Chengdu Government. It’s based on the key principles of conservation, brand, destination, resilience and custodianship, and high sensitivity towards the existing conservation sites and sanctuaries in the region. Importantly, it aims to change the way people perceive and engage with wildlife, dissolving the idea that humans are dominant over nature.
