The Mac Robertson Chocolate Factory in Fitzroy was converted into an industrial apartment building between 1998 and 2003. Warehouse spaces are divided into apartment "shells," sold to the public with a minimum of amenities, and occupants are expected to be responsible for their own interior finishes. This led to great changes and experiments in architectural design within the building. The latest iteration, occupying a split-level mezzanine apartment, was designed as a contemporary home for a young family with three bedrooms and two bathrooms.

The design incorporates the original apartment shell and adds new elements that playfully interact with light, materials and spatial equipment. The use of a single material and minimal detailing helped define new elements from the original and from each other, while minimizing joints, integrating door handles, hiding connection points, and carefully choosing fixtures to create seamless surfaces. This helps avoid clutter and allows focus on grain, texture and tone. Aiming to be honest about the materials, the history of the building and the constraints of the space, the design aims to celebrate the texture and history of the building through conservation and exposure.
