On our website and social media, MVRDV is dedicating the upcoming weeks to the theme of urbanism. Cities – and more broadly, human-designed landscapes of all types – are an issue that connects with many of the most important social conversations of our era. Sustainability, resilience, housing, economics, density, diversity, democracy, technology – all of these topics and more are involved in an engagement with the principles of urbanism.

BJØRVIKA BARCODE

Bjørvika Barcode, a dense 220,000 m2 mixed-use urban masterplan near Oslo's major transport hub that comprises the Central station and highways. The goal of the project was to maximise urban and architectural diversity as well as spatial flexibility, and the realization of a pedestrian-friendly zone in the center of Oslo

We believe urbanism is a tool that challenges people to choose a different – more sustainable, more social, more liveable – future. We believe in the value of urban density to prevent the land-consuming sprawl of cities around the world. To us everything is urbanism.

Our urbanism combines data, methods, and experiences. We encourage citizens to take part, to find their future. This requires stamina: we can engage long-term, sometimes for more than two decades, with a place we are making. Our plans are flexible in order to allow for the change that this ever-so-slow discipline requires.

Working within the sometimes-difficult demands of urban density, we also believe in a number of softer principles for creating a quality living environment: diversity, freedom, sustainability, happiness, and communal space. We apply these principles to masterplans at all scales, from neighbourhood developments to entire cities.

Though MVRDV was founded as an architecture firm, our design approach has always had a fundamentally urbanist outlook. This can be seen in early projects, such as the Expo 2000 pavilion, which created a synthesis between building and landscape in order to showcase a country making the most out of limited space, just as it could be seen in early research projects such as MetaCity/DataTown and publications such as Farmax and KM3.

MVRDV proposed a design that knits together a tangle of pedestrian and bicycle paths, natural landscapes, and public amentities into an appealing, playful and symbolic landscape

Building on this legacy, MVRDV now includes a specialised urbanism studio, and both our urban designers and architects leverage a variety of project types to communicate our urban ideals such as density, humanity, sustainability, and nature. We infuse our urbanisticvalues into projects of every scale and every type: from forward-thinking masterplans such as Bastide-Niel and Hyde Park, to incremental, community-centred processes such as in Overschild; from self-initiated pro-bono design work conducted for cities as diverse as The Hague and New Delhi, to formal appointments as city supervisor in places such as Eindhoven; and from regional consultation plans spanning entire countries to temporary installations that imply new ways for citizens to think about the city.

BASTIDE-NIEL MASTERPLAN

MVRDV's masterplan proposal to transform 35ha of former barracks and railyards in the centre of Bordeaux is an unprecedented opportunity to contribute to European urbanism. The design answers the question of how to create a vibrant neighbourhood that is in the tradition of the European city, but at the same time an update of it: historic, mixed and intimate, light, green, and dense.
