This landmark project involved careful management and a great deal of coordination between professionals and trades, while ensuring access to and security of the airport remained.

The project involved the construction of a new water feature at the airport, which was extremely complex.

The sculptured watercourse

The sculptured watercourse is made up of individual granite pieces which fit together, each piece different from the next.

Water is a precious and at times intermittent element in the South Australian landscape – the driest state in the driest continent in the world.

 "Watercourse "

The Inspiration for "Watercourse"

The sculptural water feature Watercourse takes its inspiration from the creeks that flow through this often parched environment and acts as a poignant reminder of the life-affirming presence of water.

The water feature on the square

The patterning and forms of the interior of the granite water feature are reminiscent of how water carves through the sand and rock of creek beds as it pulses, gushes or meanders on the journey of least resistance.

The water feature is further animated at the terminal end by a waterfall, which contributes a soothing sound to its surroundings.

The generous sides of the water feature provide seating opportunities while the bridge at the western end allows for easy access across the plaza.

The Mechanized Display Highlights the Preciousness of Water

The granite was fastidiously installed on a concrete substrate using the Steintec bedding and grouting system. The external cladding was also mechanically fixed.

The workings of the water feature are deliberately on show with the pump room being encased in a glass room located adjacent to the elevators.

This mechanistic display further reinforces the precious nature of water.
