Themed #onlyoneearth, World Environment Day took place yesterday on Sunday 5 June. It’s a great opportunity for all of us to think about what more we can do to reduce our carbon emissions to better protect and restore our planet.
This year marks a historic milestone as it’s 50 years since the 1972 United Nations Conference, themed ‘only one earth’, which was the first international meeting on the environment. This was when the Stockholm Declaration was agreed which outlined key principles of environmental protection – many of which still hold true today.
Driving change across our industry
The built environment contributes to around 40% of the global carbon footprint so we have a critical role to play to drive change across our industry. As designers and as a practice, we want to inspire, educate, and demonstrate leadership in sustainable design for our clients, our community, and the environment.
Hassell has ambitious commitments to deeply embed sustainability into our studio operations and design process, ensuring all our building projects are net zero carbon by 2030.
Our sustainability principles are coming to life across our design work and the conversations around sustainable innovations and opportunities we are having with our clients around the world.
Welcome Samantha Peart
We warmly welcome Samantha Peart, our Head of Sustainability, who started working at Hassell last week. We know her extensive global experience in driving transformation in sustainable thinking and action will help us build on the great work we have already started.
Celebrating World Environment Day in our regions
In our various regions, our sustainability communities are hosting a variety of activities and presentations to celebrate World Environment Day, such as screenings of the 2021 documentary ‘Breaking Boundaries: The Science of our Planet’ presented by David Attenborough and Johan Rockström, guest presentations from specialists including carbon modellers, researchers on pollination corridors, and the sharing of small plants for team members to plant in their local areas.
