At MAO, a new Chinese restaurant in Kharkiv, a few months after it opens in December 2021, the venue will be transformed into a volunteer center serving cooked food to people at war. In a fortuitous move, the designers' embrace of the DIY aesthetic and their focus on the creative reuse of waste and scrap, both of which reflect the restaurant's authentic, unpretentious Chinese cuisine, unintentionally encapsulate the restaurateurs and volunteers' Ingenuity, resilience and perseverance.

设计师避开了大多数中国餐馆所信奉的红灯笼和霓虹灯招牌的刻板形象，选择了未完成的DIY美学，包括未涂漆的石膏板，可见的铝型材，无框镜子，堆叠的木板和竹制脚手架。再加上该建筑的裸露混凝土结构和砖石结构，空间感觉朴实无华而随意，一个来自中国云南省的年轻人，他带着一个梦想来到哈尔科夫，向哈尔科夫人介绍正宗的中国美食，煞费苦心地用他能拼凑起来的一点点资源来建造餐厅。

The designers eschewed the stereotypical image of red lanterns and neon signboards embraced by most Chinese restaurants, opting for an unfinished DIY aesthetic that includes unpainted drywall, visible aluminium profiles, frameless mirrors, stacked wood panels and Bamboo scaffolding. Coupled with the exposed concrete and masonry structure of the building, the space feels unpretentious and casual, a young man from Yunnan province, China, came to Kharkov with a dream to introduce authentic Kharkiv people. Chinese food, painstakingly building the restaurant with the little resources he can cobble together.

设计师们远非创造一个冷漠、没有人情味、都市别致的场地，而是巧妙地从云南多样化的山脉、丛林、水稻和茶园的自然景观中汲取灵感，为空间注入了抒情的灵魂气息。盆栽植物、竹林、天然木质元素、帆布遮阳篷和蜿蜒在柱子周围的30米长的绿色长凳，引导着中国农村的光环，并软化了崎岖的混凝土。

Far from creating an indifferent, impersonal, urban chic venue, the designers subtly drew inspiration from Yunnan's diverse natural landscape of mountains, jungles, rice and tea plantations, infusing the space with a lyrical soul. Potted plants, bamboo groves, natural wood elements, canvas awnings and 30-meter green benches meandering around the columns channel an aura of rural China and soften the rugged concrete.

As expected in a DIY-themed concept, custom furniture abounds. Opposite the entrance is a stepped structure made of wooden boards that provides seating for guests waiting for take-out orders or fast food. Hundreds of nails hammered into the steps visually distinguish them from the seating area while ensuring they provide more grip. In the dining area, the aforementioned 30-meter bench is covered in emerald green tiles from Morocco, resembling the scales of reptiles, alongside bespoke wooden tables.

Other custom furniture includes tables and benches made from recycled bottle caps that have been transformed into slender slabs, bar stools incorporating old stadium seating found at flea markets, and leftover materials from sailboat makers of window awnings, all of which testify to the green spirit of the project.
